Search the site: Search. On March 16th,Sony Online Entertainment opened the virtual doors to the world of EverQuest — one of the most successful and popular games of its generation.

While comparatively small next to the modern EverQuest world, consisting of over zones and 14 expansions, the game at release contained a large amount of content for such a relatively new genre of gaming. Many gamers began their MMO careers in Norrath, and many still reside there today.

Time Locked Progression Servers

On June 28th,Sony introduced two new EverQuest servers. These newest additions — Combine and Sleeper — operated under a whole new rule set not seen in EverQuest or any other game. Known as the progression servers, Sleeper and Combine opened up with original EQ content exclusively.

Ruins of Kunark, Shadows of Luclin — all expansion content had to be unlocked by the defeat of raid targets and the completion of quests. The progression server concept is nothing short of a brilliant design tactic which invokes a sense of nostalgia in old EQ players and a good deal of curiosity in the new generation of gamers who missed the roots of the genre. The server also evokes a sense of achievement, a need for cooperation, and a deep-rooted feeling of competition by leaving the expansions in the hands of the players.

While most guilds are progressing at their own pace through the content, the server is really only a progression server for the number one guild. For everyone else, the progression is player-created and could be practiced on any EverQuest server with just as much success.

This is further aggravated by the slow shrinkage of the Combine population. Last April, the server was home to 9 healthy raid guilds; 6 of these are left and no new raid guilds are forming.

Guilds have almost entirely segregated themselves into niches. The hardcore raider has two guilds to choose between; the semi-casual raider has three, and the casual raider has one. As stated in my previous article, a task Furious Jailor from the 10th expansion was available to Progression Servers on unlocking the 5th expansion. Progression servers also had early access to the Veteran Rewards. The end-game boss of Planes of Power, Quarm, is made trivial by the use of one of the Veteran powers.

And finally, the new Legends of Norrath loot cards have made EXP, HP, and mana potions — and mounts — widely available to a number of players. Despite its flaws, the system has still worked relatively well and has provided a great amount of fun for progression server players. From a development standpoint, the progression server required very little in the way of new assets graphics or sound and allowed designers to recycle material to new and old players alike. Does Combine become a regular EverQuest server, or does it have to unlock each new expansion?

What will happen to the population, and will the server be merged into a more established community? And then — will Sony do it again? Other players may desire a second chance to motor through progression, or a progression server based more on your individual or guild accomplishments i.

I have met a number of videogame cities in my life, but I've never encountered one more cheerfully unnavigable than Erudin. In late March, Daybreak Games unlocked a new EverQuest "progression server" called Coirnav for people willing to plunk down the 15 dollars a month for access. You can, of course, play EverQuest for free—the game is still available, and still seeing regular expansions and content updates, nearly two decades after its release. But Coirnav teleports the player to the scrubbed, out-of-the-box version of EverQuest that existed in I am a child of World of Warcraft.

It is, and will remain, my favorite game of all time. But I've always nursed a curiosity about EverQuest—the foundational MMO that proved the business model could work, before Blizzard showed up and permanently stole its thunder. The reasons for this are both personal and metaphysical: in it feels like every other game in the industry, even stuff like Assassin's Creed and Shadow of War, can be technically classified as an MMO, and I wanted to go back to the beginning, when the internet was more remote, when you linked up to Norrath with a dial-up modem.

This is not the way Daybreak formerly Sony Online Entertainment goes about its business. Instead, you are a citizen of Norrath, and your destiny is your own. I'm not sure how the modern EverQuest plays today, but on the progression server there is absolutely no hand-holding. You venture out into the world to grind on endless kobolds, dodging the occasional skeletons that will smite you in one hit. There are so many audacious little wrinkles! Your character's level is kept hidden from you, so instead you size up enemy NPCs by 'inspecting' them, which will give you a color-coded prompt in your text box informing you how much of a chance you have in a solo encounter.

The combat itself is also surprisingly demanding. You will absolutely end up in a long, long duel with a snake or a rat that will make you question your stamina.

Which you better win, because your gear is dropped upon death. Also, as if it wasn't clear from my half-hour lost in the Erudite starting zone, EverQuest gives you no real direction or means of orientation.

Quests are remote and out of the way, so you scout out the realm of Norrath by running away from bigger bad guys, slowly constructing a mental map of hazards and refuges. There is a chance that all this is bad game design. It certainly runs counter to the instincts honed from a life spent in Azeroth. However, I can't help be captivated by the sheer recklessness of EverQuest.Download the Game.

The Progression servers will be made up of the original EverQuest zones in Antonica, Faydwer and Odus that were available at launch back in Players will work together to level and conquer key content that will in return unlock every expansion released for EverQuest since The timeline will show each server's current position in the progression. I remember picking it up once, years ago, and scoffing when I read the package. Who would pay a monthly fee to play a game? Oh, how wrong I was. Luckily, the EverQuest team is giving gamers another chance to play EverQuest. Starting sometime in late June, the EverQuest progression server will be opening up.

Today I spoke with EverQuest lead designer Travis McGeathy about the progression server, as well as some other updates coming to the regular EverQuest.

McGeathy said that they expected some excitement but nothing near the support they are receiving. McGeathy said that the players are being really helpful, and submitting instances of new quests and changes in old zones.

Players must work together to discover the new content.

Guilds are already banding together and bragging on the forums about who will unlock what content first. As I said above, McGeathy points out that there are changes between the progression server and the original EQ.

There are some graphical changes left in the game, some items deemed overpowered still left out, and some tedious game features removed. For instance, in the original EverQuest, sorcerers had to open their spellbook to regenerate their mana. The spellbook requirement was removed in a past update, and will remain gone for the progression server. The planes will be in eventually, but the players must unlock them just like all other content. In recent years, copies were made before the live servers were updated, but the oldest content must be recreated from memory.

McGeathy said that players have been really helpful with this as well. I asked McGeathy if he was worried about the secondary market having a detrimental effect on the server. With the overwhelming popularity of the upcoming server, I asked McGeathy if SoE planned to have multiple servers. The one server will likely be no transfer, and PvE only. Once the server catches up to modern EverQuest, SoE might start a new progression server.

Coming soon to all of EverQuest, progression server included, is a new expansion the expansion name is not yet released. Included in the expansion will be a huge amount of content, including ten new levels, a new starting city and new content from level one to eighty. Also in the update are some much needed alleviations to the grind. Previously, characters would have to spend 20 to 45 minutes regaining health and mana between battles.

In the next update, rest times will be much, much lower when out of combat. Devs are also looking at ways to modify death to make it less stressful. For example, instead of zoning out of your body right away, you can hover over your corpse and wait for a resurrect, thus cutting out some zoning time.
